Describe your specialty precisely

Use three parts: roof system, task and level of responsibility. “EPDM crew experience assisting with material staging and assigned installation under supervision” is clearer than “commercial expert.” If you have worked on several systems, list the ones relevant to the role and explain which tasks you performed on each.

NRCA’s designation directory separates systems and roles, including EPDM, thermoplastic, asphalt shingle, metal, foreman and service/maintenance. That is a useful reminder that roofing is not one interchangeable skill set.

When the posting combines specialties

Ask how time is divided. A service estimator/project manager may price work, coordinate crews and manage customer documentation. A sales role may involve inspections and estimating but use a different pay model. Read the duties and pay structure before deciding whether your experience fits the title.

Use the posting breakdown guide to separate required skills from preferred experience and questions for the employer.

Installation and service

Low-Slope Roofing Career Path

Commercial low-slope roofing rewards system knowledge, consistent workmanship, and the ability to work reliably with a crew.

Roof Installation vs Roofing Service Careers

Installation crews and service teams solve different problems. Choose the work pattern that fits your strengths and the skills you want to build.

Roofing Service Technician Career Guide

Roofing service combines technical observation, repair skills, documentation, and customer communication.

Moving from Residential to Commercial Roofing

Bring your field habits with you, then learn the systems and project processes that are new.

Estimating and leadership

How to Become a Roofing Estimator

Roofing estimating combines system knowledge, measurement, scope interpretation, and clear assumptions.

Roofing Foreman vs Service Manager vs Project Manager Pay

Compare the responsibilities and compensation structure behind the title. Similar titles can cover very different scopes.

  • Residential roofing: shingles, steep-slope, metal, installer, crew lead.
  • Commercial roofing: TPO, PVC, EPDM, low-slope, membrane, foreman.
  • Service: roofing repair, maintenance, leak response, service technician.
