The work & skills you’ll use
Slate roofing jobs may involve new installation, repair or restoration. Confirm whether the employer means natural slate or a different slate-style product. On an existing roof, careful assessment and matching of the work can matter as much as installation speed.
- Identify the specified material and the assigned repair or installation scope.
- Support layout and material organization with the experienced installer.
- Complete trained slate and flashing tasks using project requirements.
- Document conditions that affect the scope and report uncertain details.
Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.
Pay & outlook · BLS benchmarks
Slate installers are not reported separately in the cited BLS table. The roofer median cannot establish a slate-specialist premium.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.
Training & career development
NRCA offers a slate installer credential for experienced workers. If you are moving from another roofing material, ask for supervised training rather than assuming the handling and details are identical. A portfolio should explain what you did and how much responsibility you held on each project.
Research reference: NRCA: specialty certification. Training and certification requirements vary by employer and program; a resource listed here is not a universal hiring requirement.
Interview preparation & career questions
Ask the employer: Is the workload mainly new installation or restoration, and what slate-specific experience is required?
Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.
Is shingle experience enough for a slate roofing vacancy?
It may provide a foundation, but it is not a substitute for the material-specific skills the employer needs. Be clear about your experience and look for a supervised learning role if you have not worked with the particular slate system.
