The work & skills you’ll use

Roof repair and maintenance jobs emphasize diagnosing conditions, completing approved repairs and communicating what was found. A service technician may visit several properties rather than work one installation project. Ask whether the role includes customer updates, photographs, written reports or emergency calls.

  • Review the service request and document relevant roof conditions.
  • Identify the system and communicate the proposed work to the supervisor.
  • Complete authorized repairs within your training and role.
  • Record the work and explain unresolved issues or follow-up needs.

Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.

Pay & outlook · BLS benchmarks

BLS does not report a separate roofing-service-technician median in this table. Roofer pay is an occupation-wide comparison.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.

Training & career development

NRCA has a service and maintenance technician credential for experienced workers. Develop both system knowledge and clear reporting habits. A strong application identifies the roof types you have serviced and how you document findings without claiming certainty when the cause of a leak is unresolved.

Research reference: NRCA: specialty certification. Training and certification requirements vary by employer and program; a resource listed here is not a universal hiring requirement.

Interview preparation & career questions

Ask the employer: How often is on-call coverage required, and how are travel, call-outs and follow-up visits assigned and paid?

Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.

How does service differ from production roofing?

Production usually centers on completing a defined installation scope with a crew. Service puts more emphasis on investigating an existing condition and recording a repair or maintenance visit. Employers may combine the roles, so ask how your time will actually be divided.
