The work & skills you’ll use
EPDM roofing jobs focus on rubber membrane systems, commonly associated with low-slope projects. A posting may seek a complete roof mechanic or someone who supports an experienced installer. Identify whether the work is new installation, replacement or repair before judging whether your previous experience fits.
- Identify membrane, attachment and flashing products specified for the assembly.
- Assist with layout, material handling and substrate preparation.
- Perform assigned seam and detail work using the system’s approved procedures.
- Record repair locations and escalate uncertain conditions to the crew lead.
Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.
Training & career development
NRCA has an EPDM installer credential for experienced workers, with eligibility and a hands-on assessment. Carlisle also offers EPDM training. These are useful development routes; neither a course title nor experience with another membrane proves that you are ready for unsupervised EPDM detail work.
Research reference: NRCA: specialty certification. Training and certification requirements vary by employer and program; a resource listed here is not a universal hiring requirement.
Interview preparation & career questions
Ask the employer: Which EPDM systems do crews install, and how are seam and flashing skills checked before independent work?
Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.
Is EPDM experience the same as TPO or PVC experience?
The skills overlap in layout and roof assembly awareness, but the materials and joining procedures differ. Describe your actual EPDM tasks on your application and ask about training before taking responsibility for a different membrane system.
