The work & skills you’ll use

Roofing sales jobs can involve homeowner consultations, commercial accounts, service agreements or estimating-related sales. The same title may describe a company-provided lead role or one requiring prospecting. Establish who finds the opportunity, develops the scope and remains involved after the sale.

  • Understand the customer’s request and document relevant project information.
  • Coordinate the proposal with the people responsible for technical scope and pricing.
  • Explain the offer accurately and keep clear follow-up records.
  • Hand off commitments and expectations to the delivery team.

Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.

Training & career development

Learn the services you sell and the boundaries of your authority. NRCA recognizes combined estimating, selling and project-management roles, which makes the actual job description important. Prepare examples of organized follow-up and clear customer communication rather than relying on unsupported earnings claims.

Interview preparation & career questions

Ask the employer: What is guaranteed pay, what triggers commission, and how do cancellations, collected payments and supplied leads affect compensation?

Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.

How should I evaluate an “uncapped earnings” claim?

Ask for the written compensation plan and distinguish a guaranteed amount from a possible outcome. Review lead costs, vehicle expenses, payment timing and who bears the risk of cancellations. Compare the whole arrangement rather than treating advertised maximum earnings as typical pay.
