The work & skills you’ll use
Roofing estimator jobs turn a proposed scope into quantities, assumptions and pricing. Some roles concentrate on takeoff and bidding; others combine estimating with sales or project management. Determine whether the vacancy owns only the estimate or also the customer relationship and delivery of the work.
- Review drawings, specifications and information from site visits.
- Develop quantities and document scope assumptions or exclusions.
- Coordinate supplier pricing and labor inputs for the estimate.
- Explain the estimate during review and handoff to the delivery team.
Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.
Pay & outlook · BLS benchmarks
Cost estimators includes industries beyond roofing. Its median and projected decline do not describe roofing estimating alone.

Source: BLS Table 1.2. Openings include replacement needs and are not current vacancies on this site. They are shown as jobs; the source reports them in thousands. A median is the midpoint of an occupation’s wage distribution, not a starting offer or a guaranteed specialty wage.
Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.
Training & career development
BLS notes that construction experience can sometimes qualify an estimator without a degree, although a bachelor’s degree is typical across the occupation. Bring a clear example of your estimating process, including how you check quantities and resolve missing information. Software experience is useful when paired with sound scope judgment.

Interview preparation & career questions
Ask the employer: Does the role include sales or project management, and who approves pricing assumptions and bid risk?
Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.
Does a declining BLS projection mean there will be no estimator openings?
No. Employment change measures the size of an occupation; annual openings also reflect replacement needs. The national forecast spans multiple industries. Evaluate current roofing vacancies and the skills they request rather than treating the overall trend as a forecast for one employer.
